'Riverdale' Stars Camila Mendes and Lili Reinhart Are Over Girl Fights on TV
Riverdale is a soapy and ridiculous show, but it’s also empowering in many ways. It’s pretty customary for teen dramas to pit its female characters against each other, but the gals on Riverdale are thicker than thieves, especially Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Veronica (Camila Mendes). Their friendship is one of Riverdale‘s focal points, and it’s unwavering. Riverdale showrunners could’ve easily turned Betty and Veronica against each other with that whole Archie (KJ Apa) love-triangle thing, but they didn’t. These two girls had each other’s backs through it all, and that’s an important thing for young women to see.
Mendes and Reinhart are just as tight offscreen, but their friendship wasn’t instant like Betty and Veronica’s. In a new interview with J-14, the women—who appear together in a new Bongo campaign—admit their BFF-dom took some time.
“Our friendship wasn’t instant,” Mendes said. “We both come from such different backgrounds that I think it took us a while to find some common ground. But once the walls came down and our inner goofballs began to reveal themselves, we were unstoppable, and now it’s almost like we speak our own language.”
Reinhart echoed this, telling the magazine, “Camila and I instantly got along, but obviously like any friendship it took time to build a bond and get really close to one another. She and I are very different people, but in a lot of ways it makes us feel more connected in the sense that we can learn from each other.”
Both actresses agree Betty and Veronica’s friendship is a rare—and necessary—relationship to see on television. “I think, growing up, the female friendships that I saw on television were portrayed as catty and vicious,” Reinhart said. “It was like a constant battle between two women fighting back-and-forth over a guy or gossiping about each other. Betty and Veronica are both very supportive of one another on our show, which has been important to us from the very beginning.”
And the good news is their bond’s here to stay. Mendes told J-14 that no girl fights are on the horizon between Betty and Veronica. “We don’t know much of what’s in store for B & V, but I assure you, that duo isn’t going anywhere,” she said. Praised be. Here’s to more empowering female relationships in 2017.
