Blake Lively and Leonardo DiCaprio Had an Interesting Dating Ritual
TBT 2011, when Gossip Girl was at its peak and Blake Lively and Leonardo DiCaprio were hot and heavy in the midst of their five-month relationship. Their fling may have been short-lived, but one of their cute (or creepy, depending on whom you ask) couple traditions apparently lives on.
In honor of Gossip Girl‘s tenth anniversary, Vanity Fair released a nostalgia-inducing oral history with some of the show’s creators and cast members. The piece is chock-full of pop-culturally significant info—like the fact that Ed Westwick says he still has no idea who Gossip Girl actually is. But the most surprising tidbit of Gossip Girl info came from executive producer Joshua Safran, who let the world in on a little secret about Lively and DiCaprio’s relationship. Namely, that she used to take pictures of a Flat Stanley–style doll and send them to him.
“We learned a lot from Blake,” Safran told VF. “When I think about shooting the L.A. episodes, Blake was dating [DiCaprio] at the time, and she had this thing where she had a doll that she took photos of that she sent to Leo. Blake was way ahead of the curve. It was pre-Instagram. She was documenting her life in photographs in a way that people were not yet doing.”
Not exactly the kind of correspondence you would expect from the A-list exes, but kind of adorable nonetheless. Still, it doesn’t hold a candle to her and Ryan’s present-day, photo-related couple traditions. (I mean, have you seen their Instagram feeds lately?)
TBD on whether she signed her messages to Leo, “XOXO, Blake,” but we’ll go ahead and imagine that she did.
